School Counselors vs. Therapists: Understanding the Difference

While school counselors provide support within the school setting, we are not licensed therapists. We focus on short-term solutions, crisis intervention, academic guidance, and social-emotional learning. If a student is experiencing ongoing mental health concerns, such as anxiety, depression, or trauma, professional therapy outside of school may be a beneficial next step. Therapists provide long-term mental health treatment, including diagnosis and personalized therapeutic support.

Connecting Families with Community Resources

As part of our commitment to student well-being, we want to ensure families have access to additional support when needed. Please note that Payson Junior High does not endorse any specific mental health providers. We are simply sharing publicly available information about local mental health providers and therapists for your convenience. This list is meant to provide resources for parents who may be seeking support for their students, but we encourage you to explore all options and choose the best fit for your family’s needs.

Supporting Your Child’s Well-Being: The Role of the School Counselor

At Payson Junior High, we understand that students' success is closely tied to their emotional and mental well-being. As school counselors, our role is to support students academically, socially, and emotionally by providing guidance, conflict resolution, and short-term problem-solving. We work closely with parents and teachers to ensure students have the tools to navigate challenges and thrive at school.

SafeUT Resources

In addition to local providers, we want to remind you of the SafeUT app, which provides confidential support for students and families. SafeUT offers a range of tools and resources for managing stress, anxiety, and other challenges. Through the app, students can access mental health resources, connect with counselors, and receive crisis intervention when needed. It’s a valuable resource for both immediate assistance and ongoing support.
