Can you explain how to solve 72-48 in your head?

Ms. M. Hansen's math students did and we found there are many ways our different brains think!  Some rounded to 50 and then subtracted. Some thought in terms of a number line. But two students thought in terms of base 12, like a Mayan would because they used base 12! They knew 72 is the product of 6 and 12 and 48 is the product of 4 and 12. Then they did 6-4 and got 2 and multiplied that by 12 to get the answer 24. We had over 7 different ways on the board in each class and many who didn't get a chance to share their method. Turns out the answer, 24 by the way, isn't the interesting part, but the way that we think and the ability to share our thought processes is where the power lies!
