Straw Towers

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

Students who achieve all passing grades, less than 3 tardies and 90% attendance in a term qualify for a special in-school activity in our "Grizzly Club Lounge". This month's activity, sponsored by our monumentally amazing math department, involved teams of 5 students. The students were given straws and tape and were to build a tower. As they made their towers, teachers encouraged each group to think about what shapes would give a good base. The team with the highest tower that could stand on its own won. The top three teams earned a prize.

PJHS' annual Red Ribbon Week was held recently to mobilize the school and community to educate youth and encourage participation in drug prevention activities. Students participated in a banner contest to stamp out drugs, collectively walked 500 miles - each student walked 1/2 mile around campus, ran or cheered on runners in a 2 mile fun run, created a flash mob, and listened to speakers from BYU's football team including Tanner Mangum-QB, Nate Carter-RB, and Kurt Henderson-WR.

PJHS Parents,

We have experienced quite the excitement at school this week after the Today Show aired a story about our bicycle program. Our program was part of a study conducted by Specialized Bicycle Company researching links between physical activity and academic achievement. We have continued to use the bicycles in PE classes to help students be able to focus during classes as well as gain healthy lifestyle habits.

At the beginning of the month Payson Jr. High's Shakespeare Team set out to Cedar City for Southern Utah University's annual Shakespeare Competition. There, the students were able to compete with their prepared pieces as well as participate in the multitude of workshops designed to help students delve deeper into The Bard's text and glean from it what is needed to both appreciate and perform in Will’s many works.
